Welcome to Second Grade!!

The second grade teachers would like to welcome back all second graders and their families.  We are already off to an exciting and productive year.  On this page we have listed some information that we thought might be helpful to families in getting the year started.  This page will be updated throughout the year so make sure to visit often.

Second Grade

Supply List

2 boxes of No. 2 pencils (no pens please)

1 pencil sharpener with cover to catch shavings

 1 homework pad

  2 Writing pads

 4 sturdy pocket folders

 4 book covers

(Recommended: Book Sox These fabric covers are a little more costly than regular book covers, however they stay on the books and the students can put them on by themselves. They can also be reused.)

1 box of 24 Crayola Crayons

1 box of 8 coloring markers

   5 or more glue sticks

  1 zippered pencil case

2 or more boxes of tissues

     1 book bag

TrapperKeepers, or Loose-leaf Binders are not needed in 2nd grade.  There is not enough room in our desks to accommodate them.

What’s New

This year there are three second grade teachers: Mrs.Varner, Mrs. Zagorski, and Mrs. Arnott.

In the Classroom

From time to time we like to update the families of our students as to what is going on in the classroom.  The second grades are currently studying a number of areas and we encourage families to extend exploration of these areas at home.  Some current topics of study include: addition and subtraction of single digit numbers, place value, money, families, life cycles, plants and animals.

Homework

Homework is an extension of what students are doing in the classroom whether it’s for reinforcement, a practice activity, a project, or studying for a test. Homework will be given on a daily basis and is expected to be completed neatly and in pencil by the next day unless otherwise specified.

The students are responsible for returning assignments to the teacher the next day.  All homework will be collected, checked and returned.

Because homework is considered to be an extension of student learning outside the classroom, it will count as a part of each student’s academic grade.  Failure to complete homework on a regular basis will result in a decrease of the student’s report card grade.

Future Events

Here are some upcoming events and dates that you should be aware of for the year.

Trips

The second grades are still in the process of planning trips for the 2010-2011 school year.  More information to follow.

Walk to School

Our Walk to School Committee is currently in the process of planning our dates for Walk to School.  Be on the lookout for notices regarding Walk to School events.

Calling All Families

Families are the first teachers of their children.  As such it is important to help the students to create a strong home school connection.  One way to achieve this is by having families involved in the classroom when possible.  If you are interested in contributing to your child’s education by being a class parent, a chaperone, a parent reader, or you would like to share a particular area of expertise with your child’s class, please see your child’s teacher to make arrangements.
