Reading SpecialistDear Parents and Caregivers,
It was good to see all of my students after a restful summer vacation. I am happy to announce that 95 of our students participated in the first district-wide Summer Reading program. They all received “Star reader” pins with ribbons for their efforts. They were very excited and proud. I do hope I will see more students participating next summer! I do love giving awards! This year once again, I will be concentrating on writing skills in all grades. Grade 3 is a very important year for your child because they will be learning how to write stories from a picture prompt to prepare them for the NJASK 3 state test. Grade 4 will be continuing to write stories also in preparation for the NJASK 4 state test. It will be very important that your child keep up with the assignments. Kindergarten and Grade 1 will be learning to recall the beginning, middle, and end (BME) of a story through the combination of drawings and the written word. Grade 2 will concentrate on the details of a story along with the 5 Wh’s and H…Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How. These are the types of questions you can ask your child after they read a story. This will help with comprehension and writing a summary. Grade 5 will be learning how to write to “Inform.” Their topic will be, “Who has influenced you in your life?” The skill involved in this style of writing will be learning how to “Show” instead of “Telling” in their writing. Also, to prepare for the state test, they will also learn how to write to “Persuade.” Important topics in the world today will be used as topics. The skill used here is to “convince” someone in writing to do or not to do something. For example, persuade someone NOT to smoke or to DO their homework. All classes will be required to complete one paper per trimester for a grade. Class participation is also averaged. This grade will be part of their language arts grade. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you may have. Should your child have any difficulty, I will be happy to give you some suggestions as to what you can do at home to help. When parents and teachers work together, your children will benefit.
