Text Box: Starting this school year there has been a large number of seniors who have given their time to help socialize autistic children.
Seniors from Bergen County have dedicated their time to play with these fun and loving kids! Bryan Duarte, a senior here at Garfield High School, says “I encourage all students to put the time and effort into helping these children develop. As a counselor, I have enjoyed the times spent in playing with the number of children who have taught me how really important this service is to them. Every season calls for a different sport. For fall, we played soccer in the Lodi Memorial Park. For the winter, we are currently playing basketball at the Lodi Middle School.
I have witnessed the children grow and develop in their personalities to be more outgoing and comfortable Text Box: with all the counselors and me. In the beginning, I had absolutely no idea what Autism actually was. It was not until Mrs. Kempka introduced and encouraged me to participate in this enjoyable service. “
Mrs. Kempka’s five year old son, Ryan, is involved in the program, and she thought it would be a great idea for some of her students to use this opportunity for community service hours and as a learning experience.”
Mrs. Kempka and all of the counselors encourage more students to get involved. All are welcome! Find Mrs. Kempka for more details.

Text Box: The New Dress Code: by Melissa Shea
Text Box: Garfield High School introduced the new dress code in September, 2008. The outcome so far has been pretty good. Many sport the purple polo that was sold over the summer. Those who did not order the Garfield Polo were fortunate enough to be allowed to wear any polo, as Text Box: long as it is a solid color without any logo.
The new dress code a success? Absolutely! The student body is following the guidelines for the most part, but every morning many rebels are assigned detention and/or sent home. Is this punishment enough? The new Text Box: year is soon to come. Will more people follow the rules in the new year? We’ll see!
