Computer Applications

Introduction

Using computer application and technology tools students will conduct research, solve problems, improve learning, achieve goals, and produce products and presentation in conjunction with standard in all content areas, including career education and consumer family, and life skills. They will also develop, locate, summarize, organize, synthesize, and evaluate information for lifelong learning.

 

 

COMPUTER APPLICATIONS II

Introduction

Students will have the opportunity to farther enhance their knowledge of Microsoft Office 2000 and complete projects with real-life examples to develop skills they will need for professional and personal use. They will be exposed to new concepts that are more advanced than those learned in Computer Applications I.


WEB DESIGN

Introduction

This course provides students with basic knowledge of how website work and also basic skills for designing and creating websites. Students will use these skills and knowledge to create personal fully functional websites that display their interests. Students will have the opportunity to discover a special interest in a web design as a possible future career.



 

COOPERATIVE BUSINESS EDUCATION

Introduction

The cooperative Business Education Program is a vocational education program in which students work toward career goals and graduation credit through a combination of regularly scheduled part-time paid employment and related classroom instruction, both supervised by the same appropriately certified teacher-coordinator. The Cooperative Business Education Program is for those seniors interested in pursuing a career in business occupations.
 

 

Basic Drafting

Length- 20 weeks

Introduction

Drafting is an important part of a well-rounded educational program. Its function is to help students further develop the capacity to think, to express in an understandable manner, and to interpret the ideas of others.The Student enrolled in this course will learn to use such equipment as a ruler, compass, drafting machine, lead holder, protractor, and lettering guides.
 

 

Introduction to Technology

Length- 20 Weeks

Grade Level- 9-12

Prerequisite – None

Credits- 2.5



Introduction
 

This course is designed to promote technological literacy through technology education (standard 8.2) as per the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards.  Various areas of technology will be explored through hands-on challenges as students design, develop, and construct projects that serve as solutions to given design problems called “TLA’s” (Technology Learning Activities).  The areas to be explored include communication, construction, energy & power, manufacturing, and transportation. Applying math, science, and communication skills is necessary to help find the best solutions.  There is an emphasis on the nature, evolution, and impacts of technological systems.  Computers are utilized for project research as well as information and problem solving processes.  Tools, machines, and various types of materials are used for prototyping and project development.  Careers that are relevant to technology are also explored as students take on the roles of researcher, designer, builder, tester, evaluator, and presenter giving them a better understanding of future career opportunities within the technology spectrum. 

 

 

Mechanical Drawing

Length- 40 Weeks

Grade Level- 9-12

Prerequisite- Basic Drafting

Credits- 5.0



Introduction

This advanced drafting course is a must for any student contemplating such careers as engineering, architecture, mathematics, or any of the trade careers such as carpentry plumbing, electrician, auto mechanics, ect.Through the use of drafting equipment the student will be able to develop drawing in multidimensional perspective.

 

 

Mechanical Drawing IV

Length- 40 Weeks

Grade Level- 11-12

Prerequisite- Mechanical Drawing III

Credits- 5.0



Introduction

This advanced drawing course deals with architectural drafting. Emphasis is placed upon drawing aspects of residential building industry. Students are given an imaginary family situation and will be required to design a home to fit this family. Upon completion of the drawings, students must build a scale model of the home.
 

Wood-Based Manufacturing Technology I

Length- 20 WEEKS

GRADE LEVEL - 10-12

PRE- REQUISITE - NONE

CREDITS - 2.5

Introduction


 

This course provides students with an introduction to the design, development, and manufacturing of products that meet the needs and wants of consumers.  Emphasis is placed on an activity-based study of specific tasks associated with design problem solving, design interpretation and specification, and product manufacturing through a woodworking technology medium.  Safety practices and procedures regarding hand and power tools in addition to various processes and techniques will continually be stressed.  Additionally, careers that are relevant to various areas of technology will be introduced as well as career decision-making techniques and career research strategies. Factors that promote a smooth transition from school to meaningful employment will also be examined.



 

Wood-Based Manufacturing Technology II

Length- 40 Weeks

Credits- 5

Grade Level- 11-12

Prerequisite- Wood-Based Manufacturing Technology I



Introduction

 

This course is designed for students who desire to attain greater knowledge and skill in the product design, development, and manufacturing process.  Emphasis is placed on an activity-based study of specific tasks associated with design problem solving, design interpretation and specification, and product manufacturing.  This is accomplished through a woodworking technology medium with time devoted to the proficiency and applications of complex procedures on more advanced equipment.  Safety practices and procedures are stressed and ongoing throughout the course.  An integral part of this course will be career education which focuses on: (1) exposing students to careers that are relevant to various areas of technology; and (2) develop student awareness regarding various factors that promote a smooth transition from school to meaningful employment.

 

 
 

Basic Painting and Design



Introduction

In this course students will be introduced to basic concepts of painting and design creation. Students will have the opportunity to develop skills and appreciation in painting, techniques and design creation. During this course students will develop an awareness of color composition, texture, and the elements of the media.
 

 

Graphic Arts

Introduction

This course is designed to give the student an understanding of the Graphic Arts Industry, it’s materials, processes, and it’s contribution to general education as a phase of industrial Education.The student will have an opportunity to develop skills and techniques in the various areas of the Graphic Arts through the development of projects and problems.
 

 

Introductory Drawing

Length- 20 Weeks (5days or 3 days per week)

Credits- 2.5 (3 days= 1.5)



Introduction

The intent of this introductory course is to develop an appreciation of drawing and to introduce or enhance drawing skills.This course will demonstrate techniques on how to draw. The course’s activities will teach basic concepts: design elements and principles, composition, media and perception.
 



Philosophy

Introduction

The Technology Education (Industrial Education) Department provides both college bound and non-college bound students with the opportunity to explore the fields of woodworking, graphics, metals, power mechanics, and drafting. Students enrolled in these courses are offered the opportunity to develop basic skills through hands-on activates, explore, work, plan, discuss, and discover where their interest lie and in what area of interests they can excel.

(Computer Aided Drafting)

INTRODUCTION

Introduction to Computer Aided Drafting is designed for students grades 9 trough 12, who have successfully passed the Basic Drafting course ( or permission of the instructor). Students may be college prep, or one who plans to enter the workforce. There is an assumption that students have a basic understanding of drafting, especially orthographic projection.
Introduction to CAD is considered as entry level course so the students will require considerable review of drafting methods. Evaluation will consist of tests, evaluation of printed and plotted drawing, textbook assignments, and class work.

Introduction


Graphics communication is very much a part of nearly everyone's life. This course illustrates how books are printed, newspapers, posters, paper money, labels for packaged goods, gift wrapping, greeting cards, business cards, business forms and checks.


 

 

INDUSTRIAL EDUCATION AND TECHNOLOGY

Introduction

The Fine and Practical Arts program at Garfield High School consist of four elective subject areas of study: Music, Art, Industrial, and Computer Education. The curriculum is taught by certified instructors in each discipline, and is augmented by outside professionals, career directors, and industrial and vocational information.The Fine and Practical Arts program offers a wide range of exploratory experiences from "hands-on" work, to project displays, to performance opportunities.

 

INTRODUCTION TO COMMERCIAL ART

INTRODUCTION

This course will be an introduction to pictorial and stylized techniques which are used in commercial art as a means of visual communication. Students will become aware of the consideration for public appeal and how a message must be easily conveyed.
Students will have the opportunity to develop skills and experiment with materials traditionally used in the commercial art and related fields.




COMPUTER AIDED PUBLISHING

DURATION - 20 WEEKS

GRADE LEVEL - 9 TO 12

PREREQUISITE- None

CREDITS - 3.0


Introduction

The ½ year course in Computer – Aided Publishing is geared toward students that are not part of the graphics program, but may have an interest in the publishing field. Many students are interested in publishing, but are unaware of the impact computers have made on the publishing process.

Art II

Introduction

Art II is an elective chosen by those students who have developed an above average interest in the arts and have completed one of the introductory courses.

Students are introduced to the instructed in more complex and advanced media techniques. At this level students work with varied 2 and 3 dimensional media and are introduced to the techniques of commercial art.




Art III

Introduction

Art III is geared to the serious art student who has completed one year of Art II. Students are given the opportunity to develop independent approaches in style, development, and artistic problem solving. Emphasis is on refinement of previously learned techniques, skills, values, and theories. Professionalism and sophistication is encouraged in project approach and development.




ART IV INTRODUCTION


Introduction

Art IV is designed for the serious Art student who has completed three years of Art. Emphasis is one style development and individual pursuit of career aims. Students are encouraged to produce creative works in an independent manner, which allows them the opportunity to explore all possibilities in producing a project of creativity and self-expression in their own developed style using all previously learned skills and techniques as a guide.
