After-school ESL ProgramThe After-School ESL Program is for students that have English as a second language. Students with multi cultural backgrounds join as they learn more about other cultures. They also contribute and teach their fellow class mates more about their customs. Ms. Rebori, Ms. Cuozzo, Ms. Nuttall and Ms. Purciello also organize multi cultural trips. The ESL Club meets after school once a month. Art ClubThe Art Club’s main objective is to work on projects that will enhance the beauty of the school environment. Currently the club is working on the murals for the science and athletics departments and is planning projects to be done within the school. Any students interested in participation in these projects should see Ms. Ferreri and Mr. Garcia the Art Club advisors. Asian ClubAll students are welcome to learn and appreciate the Asian culture by joining the Asian Club, which encompasses Asian Cultures such as Pilipino, Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Malaysian. We look forward to celebrating Chinese New Year. Everyone interested in the Bible reading every morning before school can see Mr. McCrone. We discus bible related points of view and also organize food drives for the community. The Botany Club has been working very hard over the past few years to beautify the City of Garfield. Students have volunteered their time and strengths planting trees along some roadways; they also planted the new pine tree and flowers at the Garfield Public Library, which they also decorate annually for the holidays. They are also one of the many clubs who volunteers for the bi-annual Passaic River Clean-Up. The students in this club are extremely dedicated, hard working volunteers. If you have the passion and dedication to help out our community please contact Ms. Janesak and Mrs. Caruso. CBEThe purpose of the CBE is to raise money for a scholarship to one of the CBE students. CBE is also responsible for the school lunch money program. For more information see Mrs. Lottermann for details. Diversity Awareness ClubRespect and learn the differences in others through dialogue, social interaction (Educational Games), and incorporate a plan of action to facilitate tolerance/acceptance and character education. There will be a mission statement to implement these goals. The Drama Club is responsible for the school plays that take place in the high school auditorium. If you want to be a part of the Drama Club and shine on stage see Mr. Hetel and Ms. Russo-Baron for more details. The goal of the Environmental Club is to improve our surrounding. It gives students a chance to be a part of the Passaic River Clean-Up, which is twice a year. This club also allows students to go on trips where they work on environment projects that benefits our community. GTV is a club dedicated to providing Garfield with quality TV programming. We televise a daily show during homeroom as well as on public access cable Channel 20. GTV is turning the common high school students into celebrities. for more information See Ms. Kutsup. Members of the Student Incentive Program Service Organization write down the certificates of the Honor Roll and the Perfect Attendants students. Their academic excellence have to be all A's and B's. This program also gives out goodies and certificates to MacDonald's to the students for achieving excellence. For more information see Mr. Sorce. Members of the interact club involve themselves in community service projects, fundraisers and attend various conferences. Students are encouraged to support their fellow citizens in need through out search programs such as a Thanksgiving Day distribution of turkey diners. Interact advisor is Douglas Fede. For more information about joining see Ms. Diceglie Math Honor SocietyThe Math Honer Society provides peer tutoring in math each morning 7:45am – 8:15am in room 207. We are also starting to provide tutoring for the Garfield community as needed basis. In addition another activity that occurred this year was the annual trip to the Liberty Science Center. See Mr. Katz for details. Math TeamGarfield High School has been a member of the Bergen County Math League for over twenty years. Six times a year, students participate in Math Contests with other schools in the county. Other schools in our group are Becton Regional, Rutherford, Queen of Peace and Immaculate Conception. We also hold Math League Contests in our school six times per year. Anyone interested in being a member of the Math Team see Mrs. Pettineo National Honor SocietyThe National Honor Society is the pinnacle of organization that promotes recognition for students who reflect outstanding accomplishments in the areas of scholarship, character leadership and service. Students become eligible for induction into the NHS in the second half of their junior year. To gain selection to the Honor Society, a candidate must have a cumulative average of 3.5 or higher. All potential members must demonstrate significant involvement in school organizations or activates. It should be noted that suspensions, attendance policy violation and adherence to school rules and policies are important consideration in the evaluation process. Ms. Pal more more information. QuillThe Quill is he school newspaper with a staff of 20+ students. It produces 5 to 6 issues per year providing the student body with information and entertaining articles as well as innovative art. Open to all students at every grade level, students are encouraged to join and be a part of the staff. See Mr. Tamweber. Students GovernmentThe governing body at Garfield High School is made up of a president, vice president, treasurer, secretary and an assortment of homeroom representatives and anyone else who would like to participate. These students have say in everything that goes on in the school. If interested see Mr. Hetel for more information. Fun, fun after school activates that take place in the school cafeteria. Its a place where you interact with your peers and talk about all subjects. If you want to be a part of T.R.E.N.D see Ms. Scudillo. TIGSThe Ten Institute of the Garden State (TIGS) is a wellness and leadership training program for the prevention of teenage alcohol drug fuse. Garfield High School students attend a residential training week and develop [plans to bring back. To their school and community many prevention programs. These students are selected through staff nomination based on their social skills and leadership abilities. One of the main goals of the TIGS group is to show young people that they can live full and joyful lives with out the use of alcohol and other drugs. One way they try to accomplish two through various cross are teaching programs. See Ms. Scudillo for details. The International Thespian Society Chapter 4776 has been part of Garfield High School since 1990. Since that time over 200 students have been inducted as Thespian. These students have all earned points as actors, crewmembers and stage managers. Singing, dancing and acting are all natural talents, which Thespians have displayed in plays and musicals at Garfield High School over the years. Throughout the school year, Thespians have participated in variety of community activities organized by Mr.Hetel. Mr. Dolci teaches Web Design, a half year class only period four. It is a very fun and interesting class to be a part of. The students learn how to make a page web site like the Garfield High School Home Page. The Garfield High School Yearbook, Retrospect is created by a student staff. the process begins in september and is completed in May. If anyone is interested in working on the yearbook see Mr. Dolci.
