BASIC SKILLS PROGRAM

Welcome to the 2008-2009 School Year!

The Basic Skills Improvement Program provides the students with remedial instruction in the reading, language arts and math curriculum, which is currently, aligned to the NJ state core standards.

The Basic Skills program provides for both an in -class support program as well as a pullout program. Basic Skills teachers have the opportunity to work directly with the students during their regular class time instruction and then provide the students with individualized instruction in a small group setting. This type of environment allows the students to work comfortably and collaboratively together and to provide peer assistance as well.

The goal of the program is to work on improving the students’ areas of deficiencies with the use of supplementary hands-on materials, including visual aids such as charts, board games, lab kits, read-along books with tapes, play money kits, software etc.

The students are afforded the opportunity to use technology with the use of the computer, where students can write and edit stories, poems, etc. They can research areas of interest and learn new ideas and concepts. In addition math skills can be practiced using various software and websites geared to the appropriate grade level.

Mrs. Ottomanelli and Mrs. Romano are looking forward to working with your children, and to another successful year filled with much fun and excitement for all of our students.
