Resource Room

     About the Program...

Roosevelt School #7 has four Resource room teachers working with grades K, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. Mrs. Dingman,  Miss Cullen and Mrs. Murley spend part of each day in general education classrooms. The responsibilities of a resource teacher include CO-teaching lessons, advisement and modification of lessons as needed. They help students assigned to them as well as all other students needing assistance during lessons.

Students who are in need of special help in reading, language arts, and math receive additional help in the resource room in order to hone academic skills. Instruction covers a wide spectrum from individualized to small group lessons. Some (but not all) tests can be taken in the resource room to allow for extra time and to be sure the students understand what is being asked.

Resource teachers service small groups. Lessons are tailored individually to address each child's specific needs. Oftentimes, six students can be found working on six separate assignments at various grades and levels. The resource teacher, therefore must plan and orchestrate these periods in an orderly and timely fashion. Organization is the key because ninety lessons or more per week (often 20 per day) are serviced by a special education teacher of resource room children. Individual Education Plans (IEPs) are carefully followed for each resource room student. Progress is carefully monitored.

Resource students are a vital part of a general education class. They are active participants in all class events including projects, trips, plays, fundraisers and dances. They work hard to remain successful in science, social studies and health in the general education classroom. In addition, they work to improve reading, spelling, handwriting and math skills in the resource room.

Class Rules

  • Rules in the resource room focus on respect and responsibility. All school rules are adhered to.

Homework Policy

  • All children are expected to do homework. Stress is place on science, social studies and health. Homework is reinforcement for lessons already learned in class. It is found that students that do their homework regularly do well because material from homework assignments make up most of what is found on quizzes and tests.

Requested Supplies

  • Lots of erasable pens-black and blue should be provided for use in class and for homework. Large erasers are also helpful.
