Welcome to my fifth grade class!  Parents are the greatest asset to any teacher and I hope we can work together.  I encourage parental involvement and I need your input about your child.  I am thanking you in advance for your cooperation, especially insuring that homework and projects are completed.

Fifth grade is an extremely important grade in which the curriculum material they learn will truly be continued to be expanded upon even into college. I will help them expand academically but I also want to help them with their organizational skills as they prepare for middle school. I hope that we will be "partners in education."

 Homework Policy

http://www.gboe.org/school%208/Classrooms/school-038.gif

Homework is an important tool that I use to assess if students understand the material being presented.  Homework serves to show both the teacher and the student if the lesson that was taught that day was learned or if it is still confusing to the student.  It is very important that it is done nightly and checked by a parent or guardian. This shows your interest in school and helps them to learn responsibility, organizational, and good study habits. Students are responsible to write down their homework assignments in their homework planners.  Homework also involves studying at times.  I need parental cooperation to help your child learn how and when to study.  Please check your child's homework planner daily and make sure they have completed their homework.  Homework will be given between Monday and Thursday nights.  There will usually be no homework on the weekend as this is "family time" unless they are working on a project.  I will try to send a notice home when homework has not been completed on several occasions. Students who do not complete their homework must stay after school on Thursday for detention (2:45-3:15).  I gave each child a Take Home Folder to put messages and homework dittos in so they do not get lost.  Please set up a homework time in your household.

Our class developed their own class rules.  The students are aware of the consequences and rewards for following the rules.

1. Speak only at appropriate times.

2. Keep hands, feet, and negative comments to yourself.

3. You are responsible for your pens, pencils, books, and assignments.

4. Go to learning centers as directed by the teacher.

5. Be respectful to all faculty.

We do current events daily (each student is assigned a day).

We have book reports that coordinate with the Book-It Program from October to March and are based on a specific genre.  Letters are sent home monthly about this subject.

Each month we select a "Student of the Month" based on school-wide qualifications. However, we also select a "Student of the Week" person who has shown an improvement sometime the week before.

There will be three school-wide projects during the school year (one a trimester).
