Dear First Grade Parents,

Welcome to one of the most incredible years your child will have in his or her school career!

First grade is an exciting time as children embark upon new adventures in the world of learning.  This is a year of important transitions, as well as one in which acquisition of new skills is accelerated.

During first grade your child will learn how to read, write stories, add, subtract, and so much more.  I hope to make your child’s first grade learning experience a fun and exciting one, and I hope to instill a love of learning that will last throughout your child’s years of schooling.

So much happens in first grade!  Because of this, parents as well as children may have some apprehensions about what will occur.  It is extremely important to keep in mind that we all build on small successes.  Each child will progress at his or her own rate, acquiring skills, as he or she is developmentally ready.  Maintaining each child’s self-esteem and building a secure foundation for future growth will always remain a priority in our room.  Here are some ways you can help:

*Celebrate your child’s success, no matter how small it may seem.  This will keep your child enthusiastic about learning and proud of his or her work!

*Check your child’s folder nightly for homework, graded papers, and letters home.

*Read to and with your child everyday.  The more your child is exposed to language, the easier it will be for him or her to incorporate new skills in reading and writing in the classroom.

Please know that I am always available if you have any questions or concerns.  I look forward to a happy and productive school year with you and your child.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at 973.340.5038.

You are your child's first and most important teacher!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Silberman

Homework is an opportunity for students to learn and for parents to be involved in their children's education.  It is an essential part of the learning process. Homework is also the very first step in building long-term successful study habits.  Parental involvement in homework, especially in the first grade, is essential to assuring that material is thoroughly understood before moving on to the next lesson.

Homework will be assigned Monday through Thursday.  If additional reinforcement is necessary, then homework will be assigned on Friday.

Extra Curricular

   BOOK-IT!  READING PROGRAM

 Dear Parents:

You're invited!

Please join in the fun of making your child a better reader and successful student.  Our class is participating in the BOOK IT! Reading Incentive Program this year as part of the reading we do inside and outside the classroom.  Sponsored by Pizza Hut, the program motivates reading through pizza, praise and recognition.

This is how it works:

*                 I will set monthly reading goals for your child beginning in October.

*                 When the monthly reading goal is met, I will present your child with a pizza award certificate good for a free, one-topping Personal Pan Pizza from participating Pizza Hut locations.  There is no purchase required and the pizza can be taken to go.

*                 In addition to the pizza, your child will receive a fun, new BOOK IT! card with a backpack clip and a sticker for the card on the first visit.  On each subsequent BOOK IT! visit, your child will receive another pizza and an additional sticker for his or her BOOK IT! card.

*                 If your child meets the reading goals all six months of the program, he or she will become a BOOK IT! All-Star Readers and will be awarded an All-Start Reader medallion at Pizza Hut.

I am inviting you to help your child meet his or her reading goals each month by reading aloud together at least 20 minutes a day.  If you are interested in finding tips for reading at home with your child, or additional information on the BOOK IT! Program, please visit www.bookitprogram.com or call 1-800-426-6548.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Silberman

Tips for Parents

When helping your child read at home, several strategies may be use to aid in decoding unknown words.

 1. Tell the child to look at the picture. You may tell the child the word is    something that can be seen in the picture, if it is the case.

2. Tell the child to look for chunks in the word, such as -it in sit, or -at in mat, or -and and -ing in standing.

3. Ask the child to get his/her mouth ready to say the word by shaping the mouth for the beginning letter.

4. Ask the child if the word looks like another word he/she knows.

(Example:  Does cook look like book?)

5. Ask the child to go on and read to the end of the sentence. Often by reading the other words in context, the child can figure out the unknown word.

6. If the child says the wrong word while reading, ask questions like:

Does it make sense?
Does it sound right?
Does it look right?
