Welcome Message

Welcome back to another year full of music. We are going to be working on many exciting things in music class. Your children will be working on: beat, rhythm, tempo, dynamics, form, melody, harmony, ostinatos, creating operas, making a Jazz Show, and creating their own music pieces.
This month we are working on Songs about Groundhog Day, Songs for Valentine's Day, songs about friendship, songs that celebrate President's Day, Space Songs, Songs about Animals in the Rainforest, creating short melodies, and creating a Jazz Talk Show.
Performance Etiquette
A good audience member will adhere to the following:
· All pagers and cell phones are in the silent or off mode
· Audience should remain quiet and attentive during the performance
· Audience should remain seated during the performance
· Audience should show appreciation by applauding at the end of the performance
· Whistling and yelling are not appropriate ways to show appreciation toward the performance
· Avoid bringing small children, if so, sit near an exit. In case of disruptive behavior one can take the child or children out
· Wait until applause begins to leave or return to seat
· Audience should enter or exit only between numbers
· No food or drinks allowed in the auditorium
· Audience should always be on time for the performance
Your children have worked hard on their performance and deserve your utmost attention and consideration.

Karate

Every year the 3rd grade receives recorders to help the students learn how to read music and relate it to an instrument.
They will only receive one so if they lose or break it, it is the responsibility of the student to replace the recorder.
I collect recorders at the end of the year so the students will have their recorder for the following year.
This year we will be using a fun way to celebrate our progress on the recorders. Students will be able to earn "karate belts" based on their recorder skills. Below are the songs that need to be learned in order to earn a certain color belt. Students can go to the recorder karate website listed below to practice with the music. Go to the box on the left of the page labeled students. Click on the link in blue and enter the username and password given in class.

Patriotic Songs
Star Spangled Banner
Francis Scott Key
Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
America
My country, 'tis of Thee,
Sweet Land of Liberty
Of thee I sing;
Land where my fathers died,
Land of the pilgrims' pride,
From every mountain side
Let Freedom ring.
Stars and Stripes Forever
John Philip Sousa
Hurrah for the flag of the free!
May it wave as our standard forever,
The gem of the land and the sea,
The banner of the right.
Let despots remember the day
When our fathers with mighty endeavor
Proclaimed as they marched to the fray
That by their might and by their right
It waves forever.
America the Beautiful
Words by Katharine Lee Bates,
Melody by Samuel Ward
O
beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!
