The Garfield Board of Education has information for citizens interested in running for the Board of Education.

A candidate must file a nominating petition with the school district business administrator for their name to appear on the ballot during the April Annual School Election. The deadline to submit the nominating petition is 4:00 p.m. on March 2, 2026.  The election is scheduled for Tuesday, April 21, 2026.

Prospective school board candidates can download candidate information from the New Jersey School Boards Association’s web site at NJSBA School Board Candidate Kit. The School Board Candidate Kit includes information about nominating petitions, legal qualifications for school board candidacy, and the role of the school board member.  Information about the New Jersey School Ethics Act and important dates in the school election process are also included.

“The work of a school board has become increasingly complex, but members are never expected to navigate it without support. Established by the New Jersey Legislature in 1914, NJSBA is New Jersey’s only authorized association whose sole mission is to train, assist, and represent the state’s local boards of education,” said Michael Jacobs, New Jersey School Boards Association president.  “The Association offers both mandatory and advanced training, along with comprehensive legal, labor, policy, and governance support—ensuring board members are well-prepared to make informed decisions, lead with confidence, and serve their communities in the best interests of students and the local boards they govern.”
