There are many signs and symptoms that could POTENTIALLY indicate that a student is using drugs or illegal substances. It is important to note that young people are hormonal, overly emotional and often have changes in their behavior completely unrelated to drug use. Many signs of drug use in teens are typcial young adult behavior, making it challenging to figure out. Also, some symptoms can be mental health issues. If you have a reason to suspect, you may contact one of our SACs to speak with and it will be confidential. It is always better to err on the side of caution as if there is a change in a student's behavior, it may not be drug use but something else.
According to SAMSHA, some signs of substance use in schools include:
Behavioral changes: a drop in performance or attendance at school, or frequently getting into trouble
Personality changes: an unexplained change in attitude or personality, or sudden mood swings
Appetite and sleep changes: changes in appetite or sleep patterns, or trouble sleeping or oversleeping
Social changes: loss of interest in friends and hobbies, or avoiding friends and family
Mood changes: extreme mood changes, or appearing fearful, anxious, or paranoid
Energy levels: changes in overall energy levels
Disruptive behavior: becoming disruptive or aggressive at home or in the classroom
Autority: resisting authority
Signs/Symptoms of Possible Intoxication of Liquor or Drugs:
*Odor of Alcohol on Breath
*Slow Slurred Speech
*Diminished Balance and/or Coordination
*Increase of Emotions (Laughing, Crying etc.)
*Difficulty Staying Awake
*Increase in Appetite
*Dilated Pupils
*Bloodshot Eyes
*Change in Personality/Demeanor
*Hallucinations
*Rambling on
*Making Irrational Statements
*Needle Marks on Arms
*Burn Marks on Fingers
*Change in Personal Hygiene
